Free-Flight Scale: A Stick & Tissue Competition

Top Gun is the premier invitational scale-modeling event in North America. During the past few years, Bob Curry, Len Bechtold, and Rich Uravitch have been working to revitalize an old tradition of a free-flight, mass-launch event, started by Dave Platt during the early days of Top Gun. This year, Frank Tiano increased the challenge for anyone who wanted to compete in the rubber scale event. The planes needed to be bigger: a minimum span of 36 inches for monoplanes and 24 inches for bi- or triplanes. The model had to represent an actual manned aircraft but from any time period. It could be built from a kit or plans, but no ARFs or foamies were allowed. There were no limits on the model size or number of rubber motors. Trophies were awarded for Flight Duration (during mass launch) and Craftsmanship, and a Grand Concourse Champion was crowned.
