Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma ravaged property-casualty insurance profits in 2005, turning what would have been a successful year into a demonstration of what the industry does best: risk management. Strategic investments helped counter record catastrophic losses, and the ensuing hard market has been restricted to hurricane-affected areas, according to Robert Hartwig, senior VP-chief economist at the Insurance Information Institute, a nonprofit sponsored by the property-casualty sector. "You have a number of companies who are doing really well," he said. "It enables them to have more money in their surplus so that they can go out and write more business."
