Community comes first

Like everyone else, I have watched daily as the full horror of the Asian tsunami disaster has tragically unfolded. Equally the speed and generosity of the public in responding to this international crisis has been overwhelming. An entirely unrelated, but unexpected, trend concerning collec-:ive human behaviour in the UK seems to have been identified through the results of the Home Office 2003 Citizenship Survey which shows that active community participation is rising with 51 percent of the population in England and Wales taking part in formal, informal and civic participation - an increase of 1.5 million people between 2001 and 2003.
