Flaws in the system

The government's design watchdog has looked into the standard of new homes built in England and is not happy with the findings. The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) published its second housing audit in November, this time for the north of England. The results are even worse than those from a previous study in the south. The audits scrutinise new private housing built over the past three years. CABE concludes that 94 per cent of homes in the North East, North West and Yorkshire and Humber regions fail to measure up on design quality. Having examined 93 schemes by the ten largest volume house builders, it classed 24 per cent as poor, 70 per cent as average and just six per cent as good or very good. This compares slightly less favourably with last year's audit of London and the South East, in which 22 per cent of the schemes studied were deemed poor.
