AWIS continues to grow: events at the 2006 AAAS annual meeting in St. Louis

The annual AWIS reception at the AAAS meeting in St. Louis, Missouri was a popular place to be on the evening of February 19, 2006! Several AWIS members in attendance commented that this reception produced the largest turnout they had seen at such an event. Over 200 attendees enjoyed the open bar and the carvery, pasta, and hors d'oeuvres buffets, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Merck and Eli Lilly. After AWIS Executive Director Nancy Bakowski welcomed the crowd, President Donna Dean thanked Alan Leshner, CEO of AAAS, for his support of AWIS and introduced the AWIS executive board members and AAAS President Gilbert Omenn. On behalf of the office of the Mayor Francis Slay of St. Louis, Omenn proclaimed February 19, 2006 to be Women in Science Day in the City of St. Louis. (The St. Louis chapter of AWIS looks forward to February 19, 2007, as they intend to make a local tradition of this celebration.)
