The answer for me is straight-forward but not simple. It is multi-faceted. To be an effective leader you not only have to have a clear vision on where you want to bring any type of institution or organization, but you need to be effective at finding ways to make sure people, as members of that organization, feel as if they are participating in that vision and have a vested interest in helping to carry it out. I have learned over my career that a good leader cannot be isolated. She is actively engaged with as many stakeholders as possible and knows through two-way communication and listening what they want, what they need and also what they fear. And of course, you also lead by example through hard work, a strong and clear sense of integrity and a commitment to the larger goals and needs of whatever company or organization you serve.
