Eli Lilly and Company Working in Industry: Introducing Michele Smith

Michele C. Smith, PhD, is a senior research advisor at Eli Lilly and Company, working in the area of cancer research. She has been active in promoting the participation of women in science throughout her entire scientific career. In the early 1980s, Dr. Smith was a member of the Indiana chapter of AWIS, and served as treasurer. She has been active in educational outreach for many years and believes strongly in teaching science through experimentation. "Teaching science without experimentation is like teaching music or art without singing or painting," says Dr. Smith. Dr. Smith is a member of the Lilly Science Education Outreach Committee, and has volunteered her time over the past 15 years for Lilly's Science Discovery Day where approximately 100 students participate in hands-on scientific activities and a career panel discussion.
