Wo! Men in Science? Untold Stories of the AWIS Minority...

Just last fall, during our local San Diego AWIS fundraising campaign (just one second for blatant adver- tising here — Women in Bioscience Conference, May 21, 2005 — come on, San Diego isn't that far!!!), I called a male contact from a local tech-staffing firm to hit him up for a donation when he asked me outright, "Are there any men in this AWIS?" "Sure!" I responded confidently, "there are plenty of men involved in this organization" (at least I had noticed a "Mr." in the title choices offered in the online membership registration form). But it really got me thinking... we're always talking about women in science — just look at the name Association for Women in Science. But many of our issues deal directly with relationships to those guys walking around your own home, lab, or office, a.k.a. the men in science. Many are involved indirectly, by bolstering your career and quality of life through mentoring or hiring you, working with you, or washing the dishes after a long day. But some of these men have taken the next step. These are the Men of AWIS, almost 30 strong.
