High School Girls Aiming at Science Careers The Science Talent Search, 2005

Deborah Fort has a long distinguished career as a writer, editor, and professor. Her previous project for AWIS was the 1992 publication A Hand Up: Women Mentoring Women in Science. She is presently working on the 2005 update of that book, due to be released very shortly. Information about pre-ordering the new edition of A Hand Up is available at the end of this article. During a whirlwind week in Washington, DC, each March, the 40 finalists in the Intel Science Search (until the late 1990s, the Westing-house Science Search) met with each other, with the scientists who not only judged their work but equally importantly, contestants emphasized, also interacted with them personally and professionally. The finalists also met briefly at the White House with President George W Bush. These 40 high school seniors, chosen from the 300 semifi-nalists out of about 1,600 applicants, were competing for generous awards in college tuition.
