The French aerospace industry's ongoing challenge to hire skilled workers is impeding the growth of small and mediumsize enterprises (SME). It is difficult to say whether there has been an effect on the production rates for programs such as the CFM Leap engine or Airbus commercial aircraft. But at least for a country with a persistent 9% unemployment rate, the dearth of skilled workers signals a surprising lack of interest in decently paid jobs that only suffer from a poor image. Last year, one third of the industry's 12,000 recruitments were for production jobs, says French aerospace industry association Gifas.
