EASA Certifies ATR Combi

Turboprop manufacturer ATR has achieved European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification for its passenger-cargo 'combi' variant of the ATR 72-600, which features a 671 cu ft (19m3) cargo compartment and can carry nearly 6,6141b (3,000kg) of freight. It also has seating for up to 44 passengers. By replacing the first seven seat rows with a cargo section, four containers can be accommodated and the aircraft's load-carrying capacity almost doubled. ATR is also offering the design as a retrofit to existing aircraft. Airlines PNG of Papua New Guinea is scheduled to take delivery of the first combi before the end of the year, the first of eight it has on order.
