Tech Notes-Renault Clio

Since its launch in 1990, the original Clio has consistently been a strong performer for Renault. The 1991 European Car of the Year, it has been manufactured in seven different countries and has sold more than 3.8 million units. Its replacement, the Clio Ⅱ, went on sale in France in March and reaches the UK on 29 May. Production will be at the rate of nearly 600,000 units a year over three sites at Flins, near Paris, Valladolid in Spain and Novo Mesto in Slovenia. In 1999 a plant in Brazil will be opened to produce Clio Ⅱs, while the Clio Ⅰ will continue to be made in Argentina and Colombia. The new Clio is an all-new design representing a £700 million total investment for Renault. £300 million of that was assigned to design and development, investment in manufacturing sites representing the remainder.
