Nowadays there is as much consideration given to the end of a vehicle's life as there is in its original development. This is evidenced by the newly introduced Clio II, which Renault claims is at least 86 per cent recyclable, a figure that was even written into the original "contract" agreed between the company board of management and the design team. Recycling is one of the biggest issues facing the automotive industry. Even though in the past 30 years the car has become one of the most important consumer product in industrialised societies, it is discarded within a relatively short time — typically between nine and 13 years — and its disposal can have a big impact on the environment.
