The recent introduction of the first new Rolls-Royce saloon in nearly two decades is a milestone in the company's history, for it marks a complete change in manufacturing philosophy. Since the company was formed in 1904, the engine has always been the true heart of a Rolls-Royce. Its manufacture was central to the company's activities and its purity of engineering and performance were paramount. A Rolls-Royce engine might not always embody the latest technology, but it was always a superb piece of machinery, designed and built to produce smoothness, silence and what the company always described as "adequate" performance over a long and reliable life. To achieve these parameters it was felt that even though other main components such as the body and gearbox could be, and were, bought-in, the engine had to be built in-house, by craftsmen working to standards set by Sir Henry Royce.
