Euro NCAP — the European New Car Assessment Programme — represents a big step forward in offering fully independent, impartial information on a car's crashworthiness to those who need it most — people who buy and drive new cars according to its sponsors. Recognising its value in marketing terms Toyota in a rare media event, confidently carried out a live crash test of its new mid-range car for Europe at the MIRA proving ground, Nuneaton, at the tail end of last year. The Avensis 1.8 four-door saloon was selected to be crashed according to Euro NCAP procedures — a 60 km/h 40 per cent offset frontal impact into a deformable barrier.
