Clinton urges more cash for clean car project

US President Bill Clinton has requested a substantial budget increase for the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles, a government-industry project to develop cleaner more fuel-efficient cars in the USA. He has called for $277 million in federal funding for the partnership in his budget for the fiscal year 1999. That is a $50 million and 22 per cent increase on 1998 spending.
