With an innovative conference and an abundance of electric vehicles (EVs) and alternative fuel vehicles confirming the LA show as one of the world's premier showcases for environment-friendly automotive products, the debut of the Lexus LX470 4x4 (above) almost seemed politically incorrect. Yet, with its sales up 19.6 per cent and its GS400/300 saloons celebrating the accolade of Motor Trend magazine's import of the year, the Japanese manufacturer had much to smile about at the model's world debut. Totally revised from the outgoing 450, apart from the gearbox and transfer case, this well appointed 4.7-litre V8-powered eight-seater is intended to set the standard in what the Americans call the luxury sport-utility sector.
