Development of a Direct Injection Turbo-charged Diesel Engine for a Heavy-duty Truck Series

摘要

This paper explains the background of development of Japan's first direct injection turbo-charged diesel engine PD6(T) for a heavy-duty truck series in the late 1960s. The design concept and the process of development of the engine for the trucks is described. Though satisfactory engine performance was achieved in the early stage on engine test bench, the durability tests and vehicle on-road tests were conducted repeatedly for a long period of time to ensure the good truck-engine transient characteristics, high reliability and longevity of the high pressure injection equipments in the actual market.
