University student teams produce Solar-powered demo homes: 2005 Solar Decathlon Competition Features New, Leading Edge Technologies

Washington, DC— Richard King, team leader for photovpltaic research & development, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is heading Solar Decathlon 2005, the second time the DOE has invited universities to participate in building a demo home and powering it completely with solar energy. The first time the event was held was in 2002 (see Automated Builder, December, 2002 edition, page 21) and the units will again be located on the Capitol Mall. The DOE allows the universities two years to develop their projects, which include preliminary designs, course work integration and hands-on work. The Decathlon is funded by the DOE's budget.
