KanBuild, Inc., located here, has found the answer in manufacturing a diverse line of modular single- and multi-family homes for slab foundations. The concept works like this: Build a high-quality modular home in-plant without the floor, transport the home to the site and place the sections on an already prepared slab foundation. The KanBuild story began back in the mid-1980s when Developer J.C. Nichols and Marley Modular decided to collaborate on a project to build modular homes for Nichols developments. After a couple years both companies decided it would be in their best interests to dissolve the partnership and close their production facility. Then plant manager John Samples saw this as an opportunity to start a new modular company and after acquiring investor support purchased the plant here and started KanBuild in 1989.
