Arrays of carbon nanotubes have reportedly been aligned on a variety of substrates by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition by Prof. Z.F. Ren at the Dept. of Physics of Boston College, Mass. The arrays were deposited on substrates such as glass, silicon, nickel, titanium, chromium, tungsten, and molybdenum at temperatures below 650℃. Acetylene and ammonia gases were the carbon source and catalyst respectively. Nanotubes with diameters ranging from 4 to 200 ran and lengths from 0.1 to 100 microns were deposited. The perfect growth orientation is due to the plasma direction.
