A low-density sandwich structure composed of a thermoplastic skin on a honeycomb core provides high strength and stiffness for a range of automotive applications, reports Venture Industries, Fraser, Mich. Designated Sandwiform, the material is available in thicknesses from 5 to 30 mm, and weight ranges from 1700 to 6000 g/m~2, depending on the skin and core materials. The skins are made of thermoplastic reinforced with fibers of glass and polypropylene, a combination that provides toughness and strength as well as formability. The core may be composed of cellular polypropylene or other materials, depending on the properties required.
