摘要

Park and Howarth examine current research, practice and theory on information organisation. The book covers topics such as organising bibliographic data, semantic web technologies, resource description and analysis (RDA), sharing information using linked data, library catalogues, social cataloguing, metadata and future directions in information organisation. The underlying argument of this book is that, with the abundance of digital information and continually evolving digital technologies, information professionals must develop and learn new methods and tools for organising information. The book is arranged in three main sections. The first section focuses on the semantic web, linked data and RDA; the second section explores Web 2.0 technologies and information organisation, and the third section focuses on library catalogues. Section 1 expounds the advantages of RDA in moving towards semantic web interoperability. The discussion explores the history of RDA, technical developments, the RDA toolkit and RDA implementation. In addition, the practice of using linked data is examined as another useful tool in information organisation. Section 2 discusses information organisation in relation to Web 2.0 technologies, examining a range of tools such as social cataloguing, social indexing and tools for organising photographs. The fundamental advantage of these tools is in the collaboration with library users. The section on cataloguing provides an interesting discussion of OPAC interfaces, in particular the VuFind interface. The discussion also provides an insight into the technical aspects of library catalogues, search behaviour and faceted searching in the online digital environment.
