This bilingual volume forms part of the International Federation for Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) publications series and is based on papers that were presented in 2011 in Havana, Cuba, at a conference titled Social Science Libraries: A Bridge to Knowledge for Sustainable Development. The conference brought together information professionals, government officials and sustainable development practitioners to discuss how social science libraries can support their effort to further economic, social, political and other aspects of development. The volume consists of three rather diverse parts. The first part contains two articles: one provides general background to the history of the Open Access (OA) movement and analyses its implications for development; another sketches the OA landscape in Latin America and the Caribbean. The second part constitutes the bulk of the volume; its six articles outline the Cuban OA experience in such diverse spheres as academic publishing, thesis repositories and banking. The two concluding articles form the volume's third part, in which authors dwell on practical issues such as how OA helps new development practitioners by providing access to local resources useful in preparation for the real life challenges and how social media can enhance the benefits of OA.
