The use of grouted steel bars embedded in timber has increased in popularity in recent years, especially in moment carrying joints. Threaded and deformed, as opposed to plain, bars are considered by all designers to be the most effective in that they interlock mechanically with the grout. This paper is concerned with a theoretical and laboratory investigation into the pull-out capacity of threaded bars embedded in MGP10 radiata pine and its relationship to thread profile and the characteristic strength properties of the grout (epoxy) and timber. The modes of failure in loading parallel to the grain are one of bursting associated with sliding along the steel to timber interface, shear or bar yield with sufficiently large bar cover. The paper is an interim report of research directed at developing a design method. A tentative design procedure is proposed.
