This paper reviews international practice for the design of shear connectors for secondary beams and highlights the lack of consistency in the various clauses accounting for stud location, stud pairs compared to single studs, and for exterior edge beam detailing for hollow composite slabs. Five push-off test specimens were constructed to evaluate the effect of stud location and grouping in interior beams. An additional five specimens were tested to compare failure modes in edge beams with alternative detailing. The results demonstrated a 24% difference attributed to stud location and a clear adverse interaction between stud pairs. A simple detail is proposed for exterior composite edge beam construction.
