摘要

This book presents a selection of some of the 9000 recorded shipwrecks along the Australian coastline from the time of Dutch voyaging through to World War II. There are a number of well-known incidents alongside events chosen as 'representative of certain circumstances,' such as the extent of loss of life, or of a particular era in Australian history (for example, convict transportation or nineteenth-century immigration). The author has synthesised an impressive amount of material relating to what is an incredibly diverse and rich topic. As a diving enthusiast with a longstanding interest in maritime archaeology, Christopher's passion for 'wreck history' is communicated very well here and there are many striking images of crew, ships and salvaged artefacts which complement the brief accounts of each ship-wreck.
