The Murray-Darling Basin Plan: a new chapter of sustainable water management?

Late last year, the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) released the much-awaited Proposed Basin Plan for public consultation. Prepared under the Water Act 2007 (Cth) (Water Act), the Proposed Basin Plan puts forward significant changes to water allocation and management practices across the Murray-Darling Basin (the Basin). Once adopted, the Basin Plan will have far-reaching implications for the range of stakeholders involved in water management, including state government agencies, water and catchment authorities, irriga-tors, and environment groups.
