After a sleepy decade during which modem makers had access to only a fraction of the revenue available to computer vendors, they have faced an explosion in demand for their products caused by the recent moves towards on-line computing. Once, 1% of new computers had a modem. Now it's rising towards 50%. According to market researcher IDC, the size of the modem market in Australia leapt by 200,000 units last year alone.
