Ashot Arakelovich Sarkisov, Academician, Vice Admiral and member of the editorial board of our journal, celebrated his 90th birthday on January 30, 2014. A prominent scientist in nuclear power, A. A. Sarkisov has made a large contribution to the solution of the problems concerning the reliability, efficiency and safety of atomic energy at all stages of the life cycle of nuclear power plants, ranging from the fundamental principles of the development of such plants to decommissioning with environmental remediation. He developed the theory of the nonstationary processes occurring in nuclear reactors under normal operating conditions as well as under extreme conditions and during accidents, which made it possible to develop a theory of the construction and optimization of the emergency protection of reactors.
