As the world is rapidly transitioning into a knowledge-based society in the 21st century, it is confronted with the stupendous challenge of enabling economic development and empowerment of a sizable section of its population for a better quality of life. This calls for accelerating improvements in infrastructure for communications, education and health, better access to water and sanitation, and reducing vulnerability to disaster. At the same time, the global community is also seized with the issues relating to sustainable consumption of natural resources and the integrity of the planet's environment since they impact the livelihood of a vast number of people. Space is an essential tool to address these daunting tasks. This can be done effectively by making its services affordable by increasing outreach and through innovative uses. In the context of creating a better and more secure world in the new century, sharing and caring is an inevitable paradigm for the global community. This will truly engine the future role of space in the service of humanity.
