Introductory presentation: implementation of the recommendations of UNISPACE III

Speaking from the vantage point of my UNESCO responsibilities, I would like to take a few minutes to briefly make a summary of the background and actions to date of work that is being carried out in the intergovernmental sector to enhance the use of space technology solving some of the most pressing development problems. I refer to the work of the entire United Nations and its specialized agencies. The Third United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE III), held in Vienna in July 1999, adopted the resolution "The Space Millennium: Vienna Declaration on Space and Human Development." The 100 states participating in UNISPACE III declared the 33 recommendations contained in the Vienna Declaration as the nucleus of a strategy to use space science and technology and its applications to address global challenges. In December 1999, the General Assembly of , the United Nations endorsed the Vienna Declaration and called on governments, the specialized agencies of the United Nations, space agencies, and all those entities with space-related activities to implement the recommendations of UNISPACE III .
