In our introduction to Part I-Extreme Environment Analogue Studies-we mentioned 3 papers from our compilation that served as guideposts for understanding how biosignatures could form in extreme microbial systems (As-trobiology, Volume 7, Number 4). Given that today's extreme environments represent, to some degree, what may have been the norm for early Earth, the study of such sites can provide a better understanding of those types of biosignatures that have the potential to be preserved for billions of years. This is critical for differentiating between inorganic artifacts and true biosignatures, whether on Earth or elsewhere. Two of these guidepost studies (Grasby and Londry, 2007; Hage et al., 2007) concentrated on cold, high-latitude systems, while the third examined the effects of metamor-phism on Archean-Paleoproterozoic biosignatures (Schiff-bauer et al, 2007). In Part II, only 1 of the 4 papers, Benison et al. (this issue, 2008), focuses on extreme environment issues; in particular, clumps of organic bodies and sulfate crystals in Australian acid evaporite lakes. These clumps have been dubbed "hairy blobs," due to their peculiar appearance, and represent an important contribution to the study of biosignatures in that they have been detected in both modern and Permian de-positional environments.
