Civic engagement has become an importantnelement in the mission of manyncolleges and universities. O’Mearan(2005) found that almost two-thirds ofnthe chief academic offi cers respondingnto a survey reported that their institutionnhad updated its mission or strategicnplanning documents to includenstatements about civic engagement.nHowever, only about one-third of thenrespondents indicated that their institutionnwas able to document higher levelsnof civic engagement.
