Metal Substrate Extends Life of High-Luminance LEDs for Cars

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation has developed nBoard-R metal-based substrate for light-emitting diode (LED) headlamps for automo-tives. The new nBoard-R metal substrate is an improved version of the company's nBoard metal-based substrate and offers longer life by suppressing the rise in thermal resistance. The adoption of high-brightness LEDs, as light source of automotive headlamps, has progressed replacing halogen lamps. The mounting rate of high-brightness LEDs is expected to exceed 50 percent by 2025. High heat dissipation property is required for substrates for high-brightness LEDs. Conventionally, ceramic-based substrates represented by alumina substrates were mainstream. In Jan. 2019, Mitsubishi Materials developed a metal- based substrate that delivers higher heat dissipation property.
