摘要

Kenneth Hamilton's recent book. After the Golden Age: Romantic Pianism and ModernnPerformance, should be on a required reading list in all music schools and conservato-nries, required not only for piano students but for their teachers as well. It is an illumi-nnating, refreshing, and entertaining book, providing the reader with a fascinating histor-nical panorama of piano performance from Liszt to Paderewski. Hamilton is a Scottishnpianist and writer who is currently serving as a memher of the music department at thenUniversity of Birmingham (U.K,). His agenda is very clearly stated in the first para-ngraph of the book's Preface in which he describes attending a recital by an unnamed (yetn"internationally lauded") pianist who performed four Beethoven sonatas with "all thenspontaneity of a tenth take in the recording studio," adding that it was all a "miserablenexperience." This is the book's starting point, from which the author proceeds to examinenhow we have arrived at the culture of the modem piano recital from an earlier culturenwhich was so much more spontaneous and improvisatory in nature. And much more funnfor the audience as well.
