Following on the heels of their Glenn Gould and Art Tatum releases (reviewed in n2008[39:1];159-161 and 2009[40:1];108-109, by Donald Manildi and Vincent Pelote, nrespectively), Zenph now presents “Re-Performances” of thirteen 78-rpm recordings by nSergei Rachmaninoff. These Re-Performances purport to “completely eliminate the tech-nnological limitations of the past” by using “computerized capture of attacks, key-speeds, npitches,tdurations,tplustinterpretivetnuances,tincludingtthosetaddedtbytRachmaninoff’stnalwaystsubtletpedaling.”tThetresultingthigh-defnitiontMIDItfletistthentplayedtbacktontatn1909tSteinwaytpianotretrofttedtwithtatmoderntreproducingtsystem.tThetZenphtwebsitetnclaimstthatt“thististeveryttouchtofteverytnotetfromtthirteentoftRachmaninoff’storiginaltn78-rpm records, lovingly re-discovered and re-performed.” These are bold claims indeed
