Observations on Mission Command: Will Our Army Adapt?

In February 2011, in Change 1 of Field Manual (FM) 3-0 Operations, mission command was introduced as the "war-fighting function [that] develops and integrates those activities enabling a commander to balance the art of command and the science of control." Change 1 further defines mission command as "the exercise of authority and direction by the commander using mission orders to enable disciplined initiative within the commander's intent to empower agile and adaptive leaders in the conduct of full spectrum operations.
