Struggling to maneuver tanks through thick hedgerows in German-held France during World War Ⅱ, American soldiers rode over them instead-until someone had an idea.Using scrap steel from a German roadblock, Sgt. Curtis Grubb Culin Ⅲ crafted a four-pronged plow device and attached it to the front of his tank. News of the creation moved through the ranks until it reached U.S. First Army commander Gen. Omar Bradley, who wanted more tanks to be equipped with Culin's device, dubbed the Rhino.Additional plows were made using scrap steel from German crosses left on the beaches of Normandy, France, allowing American tanks to advance in the French countryside while maintaining some camouflage.More than 76 years later, the Army is still looking to soldiers to help solve uniquely Army problems. This time, a soldier has found an easier way to schedule training space using a mobile application.
