Letters of John Buddle to Lord Londonderry

John Buddie's letters are a trove of information about the workings of the north-east coal trade as it experienced its greatest upheaval, a defining point in which Buddie himself was a pivotal figure. Like his father, the younger John Buddie made his name as a colliery viewer, essentially a mining engineer who was also a mine manager, economist and strategist. When Buddie started work as agent for the marquess of Londonderry in 1820, these letters make clear that he assumed further charges, as diplomat and financial controller.
