This outstanding collection of essays addresses an important and neglected theme in the history of religion in the long eighteenth century: the role and influence of women. There have been pockets of significant work on Quaker and Methodist women but few research-focused studies of the role of women in religion beyond these. As their introduction makes clear, Apetrei and Smith see women as integral to the Christian experience in Britain in this period, and in some unexpected fields such as church building and publishing. The collection is focused on 'hitherto neglected female identities and experiences' and consequently is particularly rich in case studies of individual women. As the editors claim, this acts as a counterbalance to the many studies of men in religion in the same period.
