As Rosemary Hayes and William Sheils explain in their introduction, this volume derives from 'three collaborative projects designed to build databases which will provide online access to important classes of record or research materials for historians of the Church in England and Wales between the thirteenth and the nineteenth centuries'. One of the projects is based on public records held at TNA, 'The records of Central Government in England and Wales: Clerical Taxes 1173-1664'; one on ecclesiastical court records held at the Borthwick Institute for Archives, University of York, 'Cause Papers in the Diocesan Courts of the Archbishopric of York, 1300-1858'; and the third brings together prosopographical information derived from a wide range of archives, the 'Clergy of the Church of England Database 1540-1835'. The first three essays discuss the problems faced in undertaking the projects and the results achieved by them. There follow a number of studies based on the material made available: four on the taxes in TNA class E 179, two on cause papers, and one on the clergy database.
