The reputation of the Benedictine monk William of Malmesbury (d. c. 1142) as a scholarly historian has never been higher than it is today. In the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Rodney Thomson describes him as 'England's greatest national and local historian since Bede' and 'the most learned European of his day'. But William was also a deeply pious man, and he developed an increasing penchant for compiling hagiographic materials: the most popular of these works was his collection of miracles of the Virgin Mary.
