The correspondence of Alexander Goss, bishop of Liverpool 1856-1872

On the first page of the first volume of The Catholic Record Society Record Series, published in 1905, there is a note explaining that 'the Catholic Record Society was founded for printing and distributing to its members original records relative to English Catholics since the Reformation', in order 'to preserve them from decay' and 'to furnish material for future historians'. Over 100 years and 85 volumes later, the Record Series continues to be the core of the society's activities. Peter Doyle, a former editor of the series, brings this experience as well as a detailed knowledge of the post-reformation Catholic community and of the diocese of Liverpool in particular, to this meticulously edited volume.
