摘要

William Jones (1760-1838), apprenticed as a weaver, was the son of a devoted Quaker family and remained throughout his life a dedicated member, and local leader, of the Society of Friends. In keeping with many earlier Quaker and similar Puritan traditions, he kept a diary from his youth almost until his death. Its purpose was partly to promote self-analysis, partly to maintain details of the Quaker societies in his native north Oxfordshire and in the surrounding areas, and partly to record his connections with Quaker organizations nationally. The volume under review prints the first three of his ten journals; the Library of the Society of Friends in London holds the other seven, and a series of notebooks kept by Jones from 1790 to 1794, a source of potentially wider interest.
