Northallerton wills and inventories, 1666-1719

As a result of the quirks of ecclesiastical geography and archival history the probate records for Northallerton, the county town of the former North Riding of Yorkshire, are held at Durham University Library, together with those for the adjacent parishes which collectively came within the area called Allertonshire, one of the medieval and early modern 'sub-counties' so widespread in Northern England. Between 2006 and 2010 the very large collection of probate material held by the university library was systematically indexed, with the help of HLF funding, and as part of that project a group of volunteers from Northallerton and District Local History Society undertook indexing of the records relating to the part of Allertonshire formerly under the jurisdiction of the Dean and Chapter of Durham. They then went on to transcribe all the wills and inventories from Northallerton itself, and the present attractive volume is the fruits of their labours.
