This latest volume in this essential and impeccably edited series is dominated by the matter of its title, Bath and Wells. The see had been removed from Wells to Bath in the late eleventh century and it was the second of the two bishops whose acta appear here, Roger of Salisbury (bishop 1244-47), who would, eventually, be the first who took the title 'Bath and Wells', though his own election was the subject of dispute between the two, and it had been the first, Jocelin of Wells (1206-1242), who had sought the title, had completed the building of the magnificent church at Wells and had established the institutions and status of a cathedral there again. Assigning these bishops their correct titles as they changed even within individual episcopates is no mean feat and in itself a useful service (both also used 'Bath' and Jocelin resurrected his immediate predecessor's 'Bath and Glastonbury' for a time).
