Lost books: Reconstructing the print world of pre-industrial Europe

Lost books is the forty-sixth entry in Brill's rapidly expanding Library of the written world {LWW), which showcases the latest international scholarship on the ever-growing field of book history, and the development of print, through monographs, edited volumes, source materials, and bibliographies. This volume is one of the latest instalments in the LWW's early modern sub-series, The handpress world, which particularly explores the impact of the invention of print by moveable type. The twenty-four essays presented in Lost books arose from a conference held at the University of St. Andrews, and showcases the research of experienced academics, up-and-coming scholars in the field, and archives and library professionals from across Europe. The result is a far-ranging collection that considers questions of survival and loss of early printed books, arranged into five sections; lost incunabula; national case studies; censorship and its consequences; libraries, private and public; and, war and peace, the depredations of modern times.
