FREDDIE EMERY WALLIS (1927-2017)

Freddie Emery Wallis died in his native Portsmouth a few days short of his ninetieth birthday. There can surely have been no other senior local government elected member with so great a commitment to and impact on archives. In his 40 years first with Portsmouth City and then Hampshire County Council he involved himself with every aspect of what might broadly be termed heritage and cultural affairs and much more besides. In 1997, writing of his pride in the achievements of the 'whole spectrum of the activity of the County Council', he added that 'no service has been closer to my heart than that provided by our Record Office'.
