The Religious Census of 1851: Northumberland and County Durham, ed

The census of religious accommodation and attendance (in general congregations and Sunday schools) undertaken by the British government in 1851 is a unique historical source. This volume, a handsome production, brings to 22 the total of English counties for which modern scholarly editions of the original census forms for each place of worship (in the Home Office papers at The National Archives) have been published, leaving seventeen to do (of which at least two are known to being worked on). The returns for all Welsh counties have also been printed, but those for Scotland have not survived (albeit tabular summaries were published in 1854).
